Seminar: Mark Žagar: On the importance of meteorological input in wind energy sector

Petek, 15. januar 2016, ob 14:00
Predavalnica F2, 1. nadstropje, FMF, Jadranska 19, Ljubljana

V okviru internega seminarja na katedri za meteorologijo nam bo predaval doc. dr. Mark Žagar. Seminar je odprt za vse obiskovalce, potekal pa bo v angleškem jeziku.

The transition to renewable energy sources is fundamental for the mitigation of the climate change and transition to a sustainable society. Profitability - at all scales - is probably the main stable driver of this transition. Given the high share of the capital expense in the development of wind power, it is important to accurately predict the future performance and the rate of return of the investments into wind farms.
Weather and climate are significant sources of uncertainty in the performance of the wind farms. They also define the demand and price of electricity on the energy market. Applications based on atmospheric physics, numerical weather prediction outputs, reanalysis and climate scenario data have already become indispensable.
I will show how the meteorological information is used in prospecting and planning of the wind farms, in the design of the wind turbine generators (WTG) and in operation of the wind farms, from the perspective of a large WTG manufacturer and service provider.
